Apply for Housing
Habitat for Humanity is an independent, charitable, faith-based housing program dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing by building homes in partnership with families in need. We build simple, decent, and affordable houses and provide interest-free mortgages to families who would otherwise not be able to purchase their own home. The Habitat program is about home ownership and providing a long-term solution designed to break the poverty cycle.
Who should apply for a Habitat for Humanity House?
Families living in substandard accommodations– poor health and safety conditions (damp, moldy), overcrowded conditions, unsafe neighbourhoods.
Families who can afford an interest-free mortgage- annual income of $30,000+ per year, depending on size of the family; must meet Low Income Measure; total debt ratio less than 40%.
Families who are willing to donate 500 volunteer hours of “sweat equity”– working on your own home or other approved Habitat activities.
Using the 30% affordability standard (GDSR) and assuming that the affiliate only provides one mortgage for the full value of the home, the minimum required income for each size of home is calculated as follows:
It is recommended that the income of the partnering family be within the appropriate before-tax low income cut-off (LICO) defined by Statistics Canada for a population representative of Saint John.
