Dear Friends…

The COVID-19 crisis has impacted the entire world, with most of our families impacted in a way we would have never thought possible. It emphasizes the importance of having a safe and affordable place to call home.

I am reassured by the amazing acts of kindness we are witnessing during this difficult time. Neighbours singing praises to frontline workers, grocery clerks and truck drivers. Our first responders, nurses, doctors, and other vital caregivers and protectors are at the forefront of this pandemic. Many, many others are contributing in the background, far from the limelight. Technology helping to connect us to our families and loved ones. Our children learning in different ways.

Our humanity is on display like never before.

While so much of our world feels stalled, Habitat Saint John Region has not pressed the pause button. We are pressing onward, albeit differently than we had planned on when 2020 began. Since we can’t build homes and gather in offices and harness volunteer resources, we are using this time to innovate, plan and re-focus. Innovation such as an online ReStore format; outsourced delivery services for businesses trying to get their goods to their customers. Planning such as business continuity and ways to come out of this crisis ready to serve families. Re-focusing on better and more effective ways to do things within this new normal.

I am grateful to our political leaders for their leadership and swift response to this crisis with stimulus packages and programs designed to help struggling families, businesses and non-profits. We hope that these measures will allow us to retain many of our valued associates. Our Habitat Homeowners will also be recipients of these measures and we are very thankful for that.

Borrowing these words from a sister organization; “We often place the focus on the ‘habitat’ portion of our name. Today, I am reminded of our shared ‘humanity’. In these challenging times, it is our humanity that will carry us forward, as we rebuild for tomorrow.”

Be Safe,

Kevin
